Critical Perspective as a Creative Tool

Some time ago, I wrote an article for a recognised media outlet in southern Spain reflecting on the importance of developing a critical perspective. Not from an academic standpoint, but from personal experience—observing, analysing and questioning the images we consume every day.

In photography and video, images are never just about aesthetics. They are built through intention, context and decision-making. Having a critical perspective doesn’t mean rejecting visuals, but understanding them—asking why something works, what it truly communicates and where it comes from.

We live surrounded by fast, disposable imagery designed to capture attention for a few seconds. In that environment, developing visual judgement becomes essential. Not to go against trends, but to avoid relying solely on them. A critical approach helps separate what is superficial from what is meaningful, allowing more conscious creative decisions.

In the article published by Andalucía TV, I explore this idea in depth: observing carefully, questioning visual language and understanding images as tools that actively shape perception rather than neutral elements.

You can read the full piece here (Spanish):

This way of thinking directly informs how I approach my work. Whether it’s photography or video, for a brand, a business or a creator, the starting point is always the same—understanding context, intention and message before pressing record.

Because when there is clear judgement behind an image, the result doesn’t just look better. It works better.
